When is the best time for a camel trek in Morocco?

The best time for a camel trek in Morocco – for pleasant weather

The best time for a camel trek adventure in Morocco is during autumn (October–November) and spring (from mid-February to April). Here’s why these seasons offer the most rewarding experience.

Temperatures during these months are moderate — warm during the day and cool at night. This makes long walks and camel rides much more enjoyable, without the extreme heat of summer or the chill of winter nights.

Optimal conditions for camel trek

  • Clear skies for stargazing
  • Comfortable sleeping temperatures for wild camping
  • Easier travel across dunes without intense heat
  • Fewer sandstorms compared to late spring and early summer

Great for photography

The softer light in autumn and spring provides perfect conditions for capturing the dramatic desert landscapes, golden dunes, and magical sunsets.

What to avoid

Summer (June–August): Temperatures can exceed 45°C (113°F), making trekking difficult and potentially unsafe.

What about winter?

While spring and autumn are ideal, winter (December to mid-February) is also a great time to visit the Sahara — especially if you prefer fewer tourists and crisp desert mornings. Days are often sunny and pleasant, making it perfect for exploring on foot or by camel. However, nights can get very cold, sometimes dropping near or below freezing. So, if you’re planning a trek in winter, just be sure to pack warm layers and a good sleeping bag for wild camping.

Desert Stories - Agata & Mohamed

Mohamed grew up in M’hamid El Ghizlane, guiding camel caravans and 4×4 expeditions for over 20 years. Agata joined after falling in love with the desert’s silence, culture, and authenticity. Together, we created Desert Stories and Desert Camp Chraika — an eco-friendly, locally rooted camp. Our mission is simple: to share the real Sahara through meaningful, safe, and honest desert experiences.
