Dreaming of Sahara dunes?
Morocco offers two main ergs: Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga (also spelled Chigaga) near M’Hamid. Each has a unique landscape, atmosphere, and opportunity for adventure. Here’s a guide to help you choose.
Where are Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga & how you get there
Erg Chebbi lies just a few kilometres from the town of Merzouga, making it easily accessible via paved road from Marrakech or Fes—about 7–9 hours of driving.
Erg Chigaga, approximately 50 km southwest of M’Hamid, is much more remote and reached by a 4×4 ride or camel trek across rocky hamada for the final stretch.
Size & height: which is bigger – Chebbi or Chigaga?
- Erg Chebbi dunes reach up to 150 m in height and span roughly 28 km long by 5–7 km wide.
- Erg Chigaga, while its dunes top around 80–100 m (or even up to 120 m), covers a vastly larger area—around 40 km wide—creating a more expansive feel.
Verdict: Chebbi wins in height; Chigaga wins in sheer breadth.
Atmosphere & landscape of both ergs
- Erg Chebbi is more developed: numerous camps are nearby, and you may hear music or see jogurts drifting from other camps at night.
- Erg Chigaga feels raw and wild. Much of the journey is over rocky terrain, and solitude dominates once you arrive.
Verdict: Chebbi is vibrant and social; Chegaga is vast, quiet, and untethered.
Erg Chigaga vs. Erg Chebbi: ease of visit & logistics
- Erg Chebbi is located near Merzouga village, which is reachable via paved roads and well-known bus routes. Many tours include stops at Aït Benhaddou or Dades Valley en route.
- To reach Erg Chigaga, you must pass through M’Hamid then continue off-road. It requires a 4×4 or camel caravan. Many tours also include scenic stops along historic caravan routes, such as Aït Benhaddou and ancient ksars like Tamnougalt or Agdz.
Choose your desert destination:
What appeals to photographers & adventurers?
- Erg Chebbi offers dramatic sunrise/sunset shots on high golden dunes—ideal for vivid photography.
- Erg Chigaga offers broader horizons, rich reds and browns in sand, and total isolation—perfect for minimalist landscape photography and solitude seekers.
